Christian Middleton joined the CAF in 1994 under the ROTP Program. After completing basic officer training at CFB Chilliwack, he graduated from Queen's University in 1998 with a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering (Honours) and then completed Combat Engineer Office training in Gagetown, in 1999. Promoted to Lieutenant, his first posting was to 2 Combat Engineer Regiment in Petawawa, where he served as Resources Troop Commander, 2 Troop Commander and completed a NATO tour in Kosovo as the Engineer Reconnaissance Detachment Commander for the Royal Canadian Dragoons Recce Squadron, on Op KINETIC Roto 1. Promoted in 2001, Capt Middleton was selected for sponsored postgrad studies at RMC graduating in 2003 with a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, he was posted to 1 Engineer Support Unit in Moncton as the Mechanical Design Subject Matter Expert. In the following five years, Capt Middleton deployed to Afghanistan three times: 2004 as 1 Specialist Engineer Team Second-in-Command, 2006 as 3 SET Commander, and 2008 as the first Officer Commanding of the Construction Management Organization. He finished his tour at 1 ESU as the Engineering Squadron Second-in-Command. Promoted again in 2008, Maj Middleton was posted to Director Land Infrastructure in Ottawa given responsibility to advance all Army infrastructure projects valued between $1M and $5M. In 2011 Maj Middleton was sent to Petawawa as Base Construction Engineering Officer. As if keeping Base infrastructure from crumbling in a time of budget reductions and layoffs wasn't challenge enough, there were also many workplace issues to resolve. Human Resources told him he may have set a record in DND for the number of individual grievances he heard and responded to in a single day...44. Maj Middleton then assumed Deputy Commander of Base Construction Engineering Halifax. Unknown to him, The DCO position also came with the duties of Unit Requirements Officer and Office Commanding Corporate Services Division. Promoted to his current rank in 2015, LCol Middleton was posted to 5th Cdn Div HQ as the G5 Plans Officer. His one year tour was pleasantly interrupted with the arrival of his first child, Samuel, in April so he is joining us after a few months of busy parental leave. He did such a good job helping his wife, Laura, on leave that she has agreed to keep him arrond so long as h e continues to provide ample material for her on-stage comedy show about the ups and downs of being an Army spouse.
