O'BRIEN, Ellard “Obie“ - Peacefully passed away, surrounded by his loving family at St. Catharines General Hospital, Sunday, November 27th, 2011 at the age of 81. Obie was the beloved husband of Bette (née Wood) and beloved father of Ellard (Serena), Margaret Sullivan (Terry), Lori Miller (Robert) and Tim (Lorie) of St. Catharines. He will be lovingly remembered by his 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Dear brother of Patrick O'Brien (Diane) and sister Eleanor McGee (Hank). Predeceased by brother, Ken “Lefty“ (Jackie), and his parents, Ellard and Lois O'Brien. Obie commenced his hockey career with the St. Catharines Teepees from 1948 to 1950. He turned professional in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the Hershey Bears from 1951-1959. The highlight of his hockey career with the Hershey Bears was being Captain and winning the Calder cup championship for two consecutive years in 1958 and 1959. This achievement has not been repeated since. Upon returning home to St. Catharines, he continued his involvement with hockey. He was part of the management team for the St. Catharines Black Hawks. Obie worked as an area Molson representative for 30 years until his retirement in 1990. Upon his retirement from hockey, and while working with Molsons, Obie was actively involved in community service. He and his long-time friend, Archie Katzman was instrumental in establishing what is now known as the Community Leader Golf Tournament. The tournament is now entering its 39th year and the proceeds raised from this golf tournament have been donated to many charitable organizations. Cremation has already taken place. A Celebration of his Life will be held at the CAW Hall on Bunting Road in St. Catharines on Friday, December 2nd from 5-8 pm.
