Barbara Ann Scott King

KING, Barbara Ann Scott - One of Canada's greatest international sports celebrities and former Olympic ice skating champion died Sunday, September 30, 2012, at the age of 84. Mrs. King, a native of Ottawa, Canada and longtime resident of Chicago, captured the heart and imagination of the post war world when, at the age of 19, she competed in the 1948 Olympic Winter Games in St. Moritz, Switzerland and won the Olympic Figure Skating Gold Medal. It was the first Olympics held following World War II and by besting 24 other contestants from 11 countries, she succeeded in bringing Canada its first Olympic skating title and became a national heroine in her native country. She was the first lady from North America to win an Olympic championship. Her popularity never ceased and to this day, Mrs. King is recognized throughout Canada as their greatest sports figure of all time. Her skating career began at the age of 6 and she became the youngest in the world to pass her gold medal test at the age of 10. At the age of 11, she was Junior Lady Champion of Canada and in four different years, she was the reigning Senior Lady Champion of Canada. She also held the titles of North American Champion, European Champion, and World Champion during the 1940's. Since her retirement from professional skating, during which time she starred in the Hollywood Ice Revue, Mrs. King had become an avid and accomplished horsewoman. She is survived by her husband, Thomas V. King. Funeral services will be at 11:00 AM Friday from the graveside in Bosque-Bello Cemetery with the Reverend J. Michael Bowhay officiating. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Thursday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church, 1030 Lake Park Dr., Fernandina Beach, FL 32034.
