Sister Anne (Sister St. Bernard) Keenan

KEENAN, Sister Anne (Sister St. Bernard) - It is with heavy hearts that the Sisters of St. Joseph announce the death of Sister Anne Keenan (Sister St. Bernard) on September 22, 2012, at North Bay Regional Hospital. Sister Anne was born in North Bay, June 7, 1938. She entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste Marie on September 2, 1956, and pronounced final vows August 15, 1964. Sister graduated from North Bay Teachers' College in 1962 and received her Bachelor's Degree from Laurentian University, Sudbury, Ontario in 1969. She began her teaching career in the elementary panel in Sturgeon Falls, in 1958. Sister taught in Sudbury from 1960 - 1962, and was named principal in Sault Ste. Marie in 1962. She then returned to Sudbury where she served as principal from 1962 - 1993 at St. Francis, St. Bernadette, St. David and Corpus Christi schools. Sister was elected to the Leadership Team of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Sault Ste. Marie from 1998 to 2002 and as Assistant General Superior from 2002 until 2006. She was active in her local community and in her faith community. She ministered at St. Clement's Parish, Sudbury, with responsibility for sacramental preparation. As well, Sister Anne was a member of the Board of Directors of the Sudbury General Hospital of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. She served her religious congregation in several capacities: as a representative to the Federation of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Canada, the congregational liaison between the leadership team and Associates and the vocation committee. Sister Anne is predeceased by her parents Christopher Keenan and Mary Viola Kunkel. She is survived by her sisters, Elaine Keenan and Pat Murphy (Garry), brother Larry Keenan (Lois), and several loving nieces and nephews, as well as many grand nieces and nephews. Sister Anne will be remembered for her gentleness. She was a woman of faith, care and compassion. She loved being teacher and principal. She was respected by her staff and colleagues with whom she had the opportunity to create the best learning environment for children. Sister Anne loved to entertain and welcome family and friends to her table. She did this with great love, elegance and generosity. Her nieces and nephews can attest to being grateful recipients of yummy treats, chocolate fudge cake, blueberry pie and numerous other goodies! The body of Sister Anne will be received at the Motherhouse at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 25, 2012. A prayer vigil will be held in the Sacred Heart Chapel at 7:00 p.m.; Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 26, 2012, in the Sacred Heart Chapel.
