Ella Rebecca R. (nee Cruickshank) Norton

NORTON, Ella Rebecca R. (nee Cruickshank) - On March 4, 2019, at the age of 97, Ella passed away peacefully in her sleep at Marshall Gowland Manor. Cherished mother of Lynn Pritchard (Fred), Ruth Cooper (John) and Bill (Danielle Carrier) and loving grandmother to James and Christopher Cooper and Jesse Norton. She is survived by many dearly loved nieces and nephews and their extended families. Predeceased by her husband, Jim (1998) of over 50 years and siblings, Mabel, James “Bud”, Ilene, George and Marguerite. Ella was a dedicated and well-loved kindergarten teacher for many years, both in her early years in London and then in Corunna at Murray Street School. An accomplished swimmer, Ella earned her Bronze Medallion from the Royal Life Saving Society in 1933 and her Silver Medallion in 1940. A faithful member of the Presbyterian Church, she also volunteered in retirement with the Moore Museum in Mooretown for several years. She loved the social sports of curling and golfing, as well as travel and bridge with Jim and other dear friends. She was an avid, life-long genealogist and was able to trace both her and Jim’s families back to the 1600’s. Generous with her time for others and always ready with a softly spoken kind word or smile, she will be greatly missed. Thank you to the staff of Marshall Gowland Manor for taking good care of mom for the last several years and her care giving companions, Bev and Pat. A Service of Remembrance will be held at SMITH FUNERAL HOME , 1576 London Line, Sarnia, on Saturday, April 13, 2019, with family receiving friends from 11:00 a.m. until the service at 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Marshall Gowland Manor or the Canadian National Institute for the Blind would be appreciated (cheques only at the funeral home please). Our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time to all the family!

Most of Corunna had the pleasure of having your Mother as their kindergarten teacher or part of the congregation. Ella never forgot my kids or my name.

I always remember her beautiful smile and what a kind lady she was!
