Grant Louis Reuber

REUBER, Grant Louis - O.C., Ph.D., LL.D., F.R.S.C 1927 - 2018 With sadness we announce that Grant Reuber passed away surrounded by family on July 7, 2018 in his 91st year. Predeceased by his cherished wife Peggy and son-in-law Ian Macleod, he is survived by his children Becky, Barbara (Todd Howell) and Mary (Matthew Bryson), and his beloved grandchildren Julia (Atif), Allison (Ian), Anna (Abhishek), Jocelyn (Matthew), Fiona (David) and Henry. Greatly missed and fondly remembered by Dee Chenier and his other close friends. From his humble beginnings on a farm in Mildmay, Ontario, Grant found his home in the field of economics where he made important contributions to academia, industry and public service. At the University of Western Ontario (now Western University), he chaired the Economics Department, was the first dean of the Faculty of Social Science, the Vice-President (Academic) and Provost, and then Chancellor. He was Chairman of the Ontario Economic Council, Deputy Minister of Finance, President and Chief Operating Office of the Bank of Montreal, and Chairman of the Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation. For his many contributions to Canada, he was made an officer of the Order of Canada and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Grant travelled widely and particularly enjoyed the south of France. He was an avid collector of art and wine, played a mean game of tennis into his eighties, and enjoyed evenings at the opera and Tafelmusik. He loved nothing more than to host his growing family at the York Club where he often marvelled at how two only children could have produced such a clan. He will be deeply missed and remembered with much love. The family is grateful for the devoted care that Zelia DeMedeiros provided to Grant and Peggy. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13th at Grace Church on the Hill, 300 Lonsdale Rd. Visitation will be held at the MORLEY BEDFORD FUNERAL HOME , 159 Eglinton Ave. W., on Thursday, July 12th from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Grantís memory may be made to the Grant and Peggy Reuber Merit Scholarship at Western University; attention Kendra Lealess, Western University, Westminster Hall, Suite 110, 1151 Richmond St. London, ON N6A 3K7 or by calling 519-661-4200 or online at

I was a UWO student under Grant, then hired to BMO’s Economics Department in 1979, and later Grant provided a reference to work at OSFI.

Grant was an amazing person, and I am fortunate indeed to known him and to have benefitted from the many facets of his work.

Respectfully, Sue
