Charles Thirnbeck

THIRNBECK, Charles - 1930 - 2018 Charles' life journey began in Peterborough, Ontario, in May 1930 where he was known as Barry by family and friends. He could be a rascal at times in his youth; diving off local bridges, skipping classes, and developing that quick grin that he was known for. Peterborough couldn’t offer him everything he was looking for; except for one thing-that was his life-long love and best friend Doreen (née Coss). After their marriage, Chuck joined the Canadian Army and was stationed in Petawawa as a member of the Canadian Guards Regiment. Chuck and Doreen then spent three years in Germany where the Regiment was doing a tour. This was an exciting time as they took in the culture, travelled and welcomed their son into their life. They returned to Petawawa, where Chuck transferred to the Service Corps and started his career as a military cook. The biggest and happiest change during this period was the arrival of their daughter. Chuck continued his military career, enjoying postings to Goose Bay, Labrador, and throughout Ontario. He enjoyed this time, learning new skills, experiencing different places, making new friends, and watching his family grow. After obtaining his chef designation, Chuck left the military and he and Doreen settled in Amherstview, where they celebrated many milestones, including their recent 65th wedding anniversary. Chuck and Doreen shared over six decades of happiness together. They loved spending time with their beloved children, Barry (Dawn) and Paula (Glenn); grandchildren, Kevin (Sarah), Erika (Brad), Colin, Lindsay, Brendan and Rachel; and great-grandchildren, Isla, Julian and Kaeden. They enjoyed travel and volunteering in the community and at church. Chuck found great pleasure in working in his yard picking dandelions, keeping his garage so spotless you could eat off the floor, and cleaning and polishing his cars. Chuck passed on January 27th after a brave fight against cancer. He was predeceased by his father Charles (Tap) Thirnbeck, his mother Alberta Sharpe (née O’Dette), and his brother John Wilson (Mick) Thirnbeck. We would like to thank all Chuck and Doreen's many close friends who provided support and help throughout their time in Amherstview. We would also like to thank the staff at KGH Cancer Ward, Providence Care Palliative Care Ward, CCAC, CBI and St. Elizabeth who provided excellent care. The family will receive friends at the Township Chapel of the GORDON F. TOMPKINS FUNERAL HOMES 435 Davis Drive (Centennial at Taylor-Kidd) on Saturday January 10 from 10:00 am to 11:30 am. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday January 10. It will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church in Amherstview at 12:00 noon with a reception immediately following in the church hall. Chuck will be missed by everyone, because he enriched the lives of so many. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to Kingston General Hospital Cancer Ward or Providence Care Palliative Care Ward. Online condolences at www.gftompkinstownship.ca13250214
