John Sernasie

SERNASIE, John - With heavy hearts, the family announces the peaceful passing of John on Friday, April 1, 2016. Beloved husband of Irene for 64 years and loving father of Cathy, Linda, Mary and Danny. Devoted grandfather (Pop) of Katie, Andrew, Amanda, Curtis, Shealyn and Grace. Proud great-grandfather of Ari, Ayden, Joseph and Rosie. Caring uncle to James (Carolyn) and Carol, Jodie, and Timmy. John was predeceased by his parents Donato and Elizabeth Sergnese and his brothers Jim (Gladys), Carmen (Joan) and Frank (Marlene). John was a caring school teacher of 34 years who focused on the needs of each student. He took great delight in the accomplishments of his students when they reached adulthood. John taught elementary school, special education, and was the first principal of Lloyd Rice School (now Ecole Nouvel Horizon). From an early age, John was drawn to music. As a teen, he played trumpet in the Welland High School band. As an adult, he played bass with the Ambassadors Dance Band and with many other local jazz quartets. John was also an avid "ham" radio operator, VE3FMD, and enjoyed making contacts around the world. John was uplifting and outgoing and could easily find humour in life's challenges. He lived life as he taught his children and students to never give up, be a positive force, and always try to see the goodness in others. Honouring John's wishes, cremation has taken place. A private family service will be held at J.J. Patterson & Sons Funeral Residence 19 Young St. Welland at a later date, with interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of masses, donations in memory of John can be made to St. Mary's Church Bell restoration fund or to Community Living Welland/Pelham. Online memories and condolences at www.jjpatterson.ca As a memorial tribute, a tree will be planted through The Niagara Woodlands Restoration Program. A tree grows - memories live. 13043660

John, Irene and family always welcomed us. I became friends with Linda and we walked to Welland High every morning. Her dad took Linda and I to see our first concert 'The Grass Roots'. They invited me on a summer holiday in their trailer much fun for a 10 year old. Sadly missed but never forgotten.

Mr. Sernasie was teaching at Mapleview School when I was one of the many Houghting children attending there. It was Mr. Sernaise who came into class one day with tears in his eyes as he announced the assassination of John F. Kennedy. I remember Mr. Sernaise to be kind, gentle but firm, an excellent teacher and ideal role model by his demeanor and professionalism. My sympathies to his family and friends. I will remember him as a very good man
