Melvyn Charles Usselman

USSELMAN, Melvyn Charles - It is with profound sorrow and continued incredulity that Trixie and their three children, Jasper, Charlotte and David, announce the passing of our most beloved husband and father, Mel at Strathroy on March 23, 2015 in his 70th year. Predeceased by our loved son and brother, Richard (2007), Mel's brother Donald (2013) and his parents Frank and Eva Usselman. An author, an award-winning professor of chemistry at UWO and an amazing hockey, baseball, and soccer coach for his children, the man found time for it all. He was also creator of the Usselman Championship Frisbee Golf Course at M-T Acres where he played countless games together with his family, evaluating frisbee shots and life decisions along the way, proudly and cheerfully relinquishing his long-held champion status to his children (and, once, to his wife) as they grew older. He envisioned and built, together with Trixie, an oasis of harmony, a place where he weeded his garden listening to the Jays' games and watched the horses with perfect contentment as they rolled in the grass. Mel had just completed his life-work, Pure Intelligence: The Life of William Hyde Wollaston, which he felt was his greatest academic achievement. But his greatest lifetime achievement was reflected in his pride in his children, not only due to their pursuit of professions, but in their upright characters and their love of life and laughter. Throughout his life, Mel had consciously made our children his main priority, spending as much time as possible with them. He had no regrets of time not well spent. Our families, the Usselmans and the Sennemas, feel extraordinarily honoured and incredibly blessed to have loved Mel and to have been able to share our lives with him. A very special thank-you to the nurses of the 2nd floor at the Strathroy-Middlesex General Hospital about whom Mel & the family could not give enough praise for their warmth, humour and dedication to their profession throughout his stays there. We would also like to thank the incomparable Dr. Jain and Dr. Naylor for their compassionate care. Cremation has taken place. There will be a celebration of life event in late April at a date yet to be determined at which guests who wish to share memories of Mel will be encouraged to do so. Memorial donations to the Strathroy-Middlesex General Hospital (or to the charity of one's choice) would be gratefully acknowledged. www.ontariocremationservices.com.12914586

I worked at the Dean's Office, Science, from 1987-1998, and had many conversations with Mel during that time. He was always so helpful and enthusiastic about everything it seemed. I smiled when I read the article about Mel in the Alumni Gazette about him being fascinated about his cancer. His curiosity was contagious. I feel honoured to have known him. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.
