Thomas "Tom" Leroy Roets

ROETS, Thomas "Tom" Leroy - Passed away suddenly on August 16, 2013. He will be remembered as a loving friend, son, husband, brother, uncle, father and grandpa. Tom was born in Rock Island, IL on May 31, 1941. He graduated from Rock Island High School in 1959 and then Augustana College (Rock Island) in 1963 with a B.A. and major in accounting. He began employment with Ernst & Ernst in Chicago, and then went to work for Deere and Company in July 1964. After 37 years of service (working and living in Welland, Ontario; Des Moines and Davenport, Iowa; and Rock Island, Illinois) he retired from Deere as the Director of Finance for World Wide Agriculture Division. Subsequent to retirement he served as a consultant to Deere on various projects. In June of this year he was awarded the John M. Gould Award by Deere Finance in recognition of outstanding career achievements. A believer in "getting things done," Tom was an active volunteer for civic, academic and church organizations for his whole adult life. Following retirement to Naples, FL (and briefly Lake-of-the-Ozarks, MO) Tom became a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Naples, where he served on committees and sang in the choir. In the Naples community, he was a graduate of the Greater Naples Leadership Class, and served on the board and was president of the Literacy Volunteers of Collier County. He was active in Habitat for Humanity as a new family mentor and loved practicing his Spanish. He served as the CFO for the Tumaini Fund. He also proudly served his alma mater, Augustana, as a class representative for many years and alumni board member from 1995-2002. Athletic even after joint replacements, Tom was an avid fan and player of tennis and golf for his whole life. He played tennis for Augustana, and played tournament tennis while living in the Quad Cities until moving to Florida. He was greatly involved with the Naples Lakes tennis community and golfed and played tennis at Olde Cypress. Tom will be remembered by all as an outspoken pragmatist and a non-stereotypical accountant. He rarely let an opinion go unspoken, and rarely missed an opportunity to give of himself or his time. His laughter rang long, loud and often. In recent years he loved travelling with Joan and their friends, exploring the world at his always slightly frenetic pace. Tom was predeceased by his father Camiel Roets, his sister-in-law Pamela Roets and his son-in-law Richard Hill. Tom is survived by his wife of 37 years, Joan of Naples, FL; his mother, Eleanor of Rock Island, IL; and his brother Terry (Sharon) of Lake-of–the-Ozarks, MO; his former wife and mother of his children Noreen Casson of Welland, Ontario; his daughter Elizabeth Hill (Danny Poulin) of Welland, Ontario, Canada; son Jeffrey Roets (Jane) of Ellington, CT; and son Dr. Timothy Roets (Amanda) of Westfield, NY. He also is survived by nephew David Roets (Debby) Phoenix, AZ; and niece Heather Meade (Dennis) of Kansas. Loving grandchildren include Kelsi (Allie), Jonathan and Barbara Hopkins and Alyssa Poulin of Welland, Ontario; Andrew, Kathryn and Helen Roets of Ellington, CT; and Max and Ayla Roets of Westfield, NY. A memorial service will be held at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 777 Mooring Line Drive, Naples, at 1 pm on Tuesday, August 20. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Thomas L. and Joan D. Roets Family Scholarship at Augustana College. This scholarship is awarded annually to a prospective Accounting major who demonstrates financial need. Condolences may be expressed at musicalstretch46@gmail.com12542681

Sincere condolences to all of Tom's family from a former Welland Accounting colleague. Tom hired me many, many years ago to do the accounts payable in Welland. His instructions to me were, "don’t think of it as Deere’s money…think of it as YOUR money!" Definitely a company man.
