Albert J. Mettler

METTLER, Albert J. - Had passed away at the Greater Niagara General Hospital on Sunday, December 23rd, 2012 at the age of 86. He is survived by his cousins Myrtha and Werner Zuber of San Jose, California and Kathy Locher of Placerville, California. He was predeceased by his parents Anna and John Mettler. Albert was born on July 11th, 1926 in New Zealand and had lived and studied in Switzerland for many years before immigrating to Canada in 1948. A longtime resident of Fonthill, Albert had been employed by the Greater Niagara General Hospital for almost 40 years in the finance department until his retirement in 1991 as the hospital's Statistical Analyst. After his retirement Albert continued his association with the hospital as a volunteer for many more years. Albert was a founding member of the Canadian Metric Association and had held various positions on their Board of Directors and had played a major role as a consultant during Canada's conversion to the Metric System. Albert also had a great passion for electric railways and had traveled extensively throughout Europe during his vacation times researching their various railway designs and with his accumulated knowledge had later become a consultant in electric railway design in Canada. He was a regular contributor to the country's major newspapers (Globe and Mail, National Post and Toronto Star) with his visions for the future of electric railways in Canada. Albert had a great fascination for languages and during his active years had been known to speak as many as ten different languages including Mandarin and Russian. In keeping with the family's wishes cremation has taken place. Memorial Service will be held at PLEASANTVIEW FUNERAL HOME & RECEPTION CENTRE, 2250 Hwy #20 (with entrance off Merrittville Hwy 905.892.1699) on Thursday, January 10th, 2013 at 11 o'clock. Inurnment will follow in the Mausoleum at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens. In memory of Albert, those who wish may make a donation to either the Greater Niagara General Hospital Foundation or to a charity of their choice. I missed my annual christmas card from Albert, just decided to search info and found Albert had passed. I trained is Ultrasound at GNGH 28 yrs ago and grew to know Albert as a kind , interesting person. He was generous in sending postcards of his many travels over the years and a note during the holidays. Sorry I missed his memorial service. Sincerely Cindy
