SLOAN - Cela Ann (McKillop) 1934-2011- Cela died peacefully, surrounded by her family, after a sudden illness on Saturday, October 29th. She was born in Wallacetown , Ontario and in her 55th year of marriage to Dr. W. George Sloan. The couple lived and raised their family in St. Thomas , Ontario with time spent in Detroit, Malaya and Saudi Arabia . Beloved mother of four sons: Christopher, Robert, James and Andrew and three granddaughters: Catharine, Amy and Meg. Cela was the youngest of four children of the late Margaret Cela and John Byron McKillop and leaves siblings Mary (the late Murray Bailey), Jean (Mrs. Russ Allison) and sister-in-law Lilias McKillop (the late Duncan K. McKillop). A graduate of the University of Western Ontario and the active head of the Elgin UWO Alumni association, Cela began her career as a teacher and was a passionate proponent of education. She and her husband formed the Sloan/McKillop scholarship fund in 1979 which continues to provide financial assistance for hundreds of post secondary students in Elgin County seeking careers in education and early childhood development. A founding member and later President of the St. Thomas Art Gallery, Cela was also instrumental in bringing Meals on Wheels to St. Thomas, later co-ordinating the service. She was a board member and passionate supporter of Trinity Anglican Church St. Thomas and the Old St. Thomas Church where she worked on the successful restoration project. Cela devoted her life to her family and community service and was respected for a half century of leadership and engagement. Honours included a Canada 125 medal for volunteerism and recognition by the local community with a St. Thomas Volunteer of the Year Award. Cela continued to manage the family businesses with her husband, and they looked forward to and cherished summers spent at the family cottage in Port Stanley , Ontario where they enjoyed entertaining friends and a large extended family. In her leisure time she was an active member of the St. Thomas Investment Club, St. Thomas Book Club and enjoyed the opportunity to continue her lifelong interest in bridge with family and friends. Cela was a well known member of the St. Thomas community and will be fondly remembered by those who knew her and respected her vigorous work ethic and selfless dedication to family. Visitation at Williams Funeral Home , (Condolences/Inquiries may be sent to email@example.com) Tuesday, November 1st from 2:30-4:30 and 7pm-9pm. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Anglican Church Wednesday, November 2nd at 1pm. If desired, memorial donations can be made to the Sloan/Mckillop scholarship fund in Cela’s name.
