BELANGER, Roger - It is with profound sadness that the family of Roger Richard Belanger announce his sudden passing at his home on Friday, September 16, 2011 at the age of 45. Beloved son of Roger and Helen Belanger. Proud father of Noah. Roger will be sadly missed by his sister Sue Patus and her husband Mark and their children Joshua, Chad, Dylan and Ocean and his brother Chris Belanger and his son Weston. Cherished grandson of Anna Sobieraj. Dear nephew of Joey Sobieraj, his wife Judy and their children Jordyn and Lyndsay and Claude Belanger and his son Jimmy and family. Roger's family was immensely proud of what he accomplished on the ice as well as off the ice. Roger devoted countless hours in both professional and volunteer capacities to enriching the lives of special needs youngsters. He shared his vast hockey expertise as a Welland Minor Hockey Association coach and gave selflessly as a community events supporter. His proudest accomplishment was being a loving mentor and father to his son Noah. Respecting the wishes of the Belanger family, a private service with only immediate family in attendance has taken place. Flowers gratefully declined. As an expression of sympathy, donations in memory of Roger can be made to a trust fund for his son Noah with cards and information available at the H.L. CUDNEY FUNERAL HOME, 241 West Main Street, Welland who are in care of the funeral arrangements. Posted by Mike Zareski (Friend) On Saturday, May 4, 2013 I wasn't a close friend of Rogers' but we hung out on a few occasions and with fond memories. I've been away from the area for many years and just today, (while visiting family) of heard this horrific news. I often asked my sister if she new what Roger was up to over the years.
A big fan, admirer of his personality and pleasantness and he always seemed to go out of his way to say hi. I wish his family and his boy nothing but my deep condolences...very very sad. God Bless!
Thank You!!

Very sad to hear Roger is gone
Posted by Bob Mallon (Long time friend) On Wednesday, September 21, 2011 I was so sad to hear that Roger had passed away. Roger and I became very good friends while he lived with my parents in Pittsburgh so many years ago. He instantly became a member of our family and brought so much joy into our house at the time with his outgoing personality and his humor. He really became a brother to me and a son to my Mum and Dad. "Rogie, (as we called him), say hello to my Old Man up there for me. I know your both there together and we love you both. God bless you."
WIth deep sympathy
Posted by Primerano family (friend) On Tuesday, September 20, 2011 Everyone will miss ROGER, who not only was a great guy, but one of the finest hockey players to come out of the Niagara area. After a 90 pt season in the OHL in 83-84, Roger was Drafted #16 in the First Round of the 1984 NHL Draft by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Injuries shortened his career but his love of life, family, and community involvement made him a popular local celebrity. Welland will miss Roger Belanger, and everyone will always look up to him with PRIDE and RESPECT. GOD bless you forever!
My heartfelt sympathy
Posted by Brenda Lavigne (friend) On Tuesday, September 20, 2011 My heart goes out to the Belanger/Patus family during this sad time. What a loss. May you rest in peace Roger.

Posted by Jeff Chychrun (Friend) On Tuesday, September 20, 2011 I'm so very sorry to hear of Roger's passing. It has been many years since I'd seen him but I had the pleasure of being a teammate of Roger's with the Kingston Canadians in 1983-84 and lived around the corner from him that season. Together with Dennis Smith we drove to the rink everyday. He was a terrific player, teammate and friend. To the entire Belanger family, my heartfelt sympathies. Jeff Chychrun

Posted by The Hodgkins Family (Friends) On Tuesday, September 20, 2011 We are thinking of all of you... Roger was a great person and a wonderful hockey coach, our son Kevin thought the world of him. Roger was funny & a truly all round great person, there was never one time we didn't see him that he didn't stop and talk and ask how everyone in the family was doing after hockey was finished. We will truly miss Roger and our hearts go out to all of you.
