William Beattie

BEATTIE, William - It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our precious William in his 72nd year, at Trillium Villa, on December 26, 2018, surrounded by loving caregivers and family. Bill was the loving husband, best friend, and strength of April Lea for 46 wonderful years. Bill is survived by his only brother Fred (Dorothy). Remembered by brother-in-law Drew (Marilyn), sister-in-law Cynthia, and many nieces, nephews, and life-long friends. Bill was born in St. Thomas, and pursued graduate education at McMaster and Tubingen (Germany) Universities, receiving a fellowship to teach for Lambton Board of Education (1972-2001). His love of languages distinguished his teaching career where he was revered as a French and German teacher and a respected mentor for students and colleagues. William loved traveling, sports and coaching, life-long learning, but classical and choral music was his true leisure passion. William was a man of faith and integrity, and warmth and kindness. Before his health failed, William was a driver for Red Cross (10 years), grateful he could contribute to this community he loved. William touched many lives with his humility and quiet strength. Cremation has taken place. A memorial to honour Bill will be held at Central Baptist Church, 391 London Rd., Sarnia, on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, sympathy may be expressed through donations to Parkinsonís Society, Canadian Red Cross, and Canadian Bible Society (cheques only at the funeral home please). Arrangements entrusted to SMITH FUNERAL HOME , 1576 London Line, Sarnia. Memories and condolences may be sent online at www.smithfuneralhome.ca13321023

He was my first German teacher with my friend Eugene and Hank! He was great! Gene knows all the stories of the German contest we attended in London, Ontario when I came in last place! hehe

Mr. Beattie was one of my favorite teachers. I remember him for his good humour, his happy disposition, his genuine enjoyment for teaching and his support. He was admired and respected by students. Sorry for your loss.
the Measure of the man

I first started teaching & coaching Jr football with Bill at Northern in 1987. He was a mountain of a man with a river of knowledge, someone whom I looked upon as the consummate amalgam of culture, intellect & gemütlichkeit. Kudos to all who've left their reflections here. The consistency among so many amenable facets of his character reveal the authenticity of a real gem. I am sorry for your loss, April.

Mr Beattie was a favourite teacher of mine, I learned German and one year of French from him. I remember the trips he organized to London to The German competition, in the late 70s! I have often thought of him over the years.
