Tony Roels

ROELS, Tony - 1931 - 2018 Mr. Tony Roels passed away peacefully and quietly on Monday, December 3, 2018 at the Norfolk General Hospital in Simcoe, Ontario at the age of 87. Born in Meulebeke, Belgium on June 11, 1931 to the late August Octave Roels (1977) and the late Margaretha Maria de Braeve (1989). He came to Canada in April 1953 where he worked on various farms. He came to Delhi Township in 1954 where he met his wife, the late Elizabeth (Betty) Mertens (1996). They moved to Scotland, Ontario in 1958 and started growing tobacco, eventually purchasing the farm four years later. In 1958 there were no Catholic elementary schools in the Scotland-Oakland area. Tony knew that in order to be successful in life, a good education was important. So with a group of other Catholic parents, Tony applied for and set up a Catholic School zone in Scotland, Ontario. Through their efforts Catholic education arrived in Scotland. In 1965 St. Anthony Daniel School was opened with approximately 100 students. Tony was a trustee for this school from 1964 to 1969 and when the boards amalgamated he served on the new board until 1976. During his early time as a trustee, Tony’s responsibilities included fundraising, facility maintenance and staffing. Tony was presented with the Outstanding Contribution to Catholic Education Award in 2017. Tony was very active in St. Anthony Daniel Church where he was a member of the first council and an usher every week. Tony was proud of his heritage and was a member and Director of the Delhi Belgian Club, Past President and proud member of Brant County Federation of Agriculture, and an Insurance Adjuster for hail and barn insurance for 32 years through Otter Dorchester Insurance. Loving father of three daughters: Margaret Ranieri (and her husband Sam) with Stephen Ranieri, Mark, Glenna, Hannah and Seth Ranieri, and Victor and Lauren Ranieri; Cathy Noorenberghe (and her husband Frank) with Matthew Noorenberghe, Marc and Alyssa Noorenberghe, and Michelle Noorenberghe; and Sherry Schell (and her husband Blaine) with Caitlyn Schell and Kyle Schell. Companion to Alice Komienski. His sisters in Belgium are: Gabriella Roels, the late Helena Roels (2006), Jeanne Roels, and Maria Roels. His brothers are: Jacques Roels (1994), Raphael Roels, and Herman Roels. Proud uncle to many nieces and nephews in Canada, Belgium and the United States. Friends may call at the MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, Delhi (519) 582-1290 for visitation on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Our Lady, Queen of Martyrs Roman Catholic Church, Delhi on Thursday, December 6, 2018 at 10:00 a.m. Interment in Delhi Cemetery. Donations to Norfolk General Hospital, Simcoe (Palliative Care Unit), Camp Trillium-Rainbow Lake, Who-Did-It Club, or a charity of your choice would be greatly appreciated by the family.
