Caroline Shachtay

SHACHTAY, Caroline - May 25, 1937 - September 28, 2018 With sadness, we announce the passing of our dearly loved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Caroline passed away in the afternoon of September 28, 2018 at Arborg District Health Centre. She leaves to cherish her memory; her daughters, Beverly (Percy), Darlene (Fred), grandchildren Daryl (Sabrina), Jeffrey, Lori (Trevor), Derek and Caroline and great grandchildren, Byron, Alex, Jaden, Coty and Summer, sister-in-law Helen, Caroline was predeceased by her husband, Steve in 2010, her daughter Rose Marie in 2016, parents Mike and Helen Mazurkewich and her brothers Joe, Martin (Martha), Eddie, and sister Minnie (Bob). Caroline grew up on a farm in Sylvan, MB and when married lived almost her entire life in Morweena where she farmed alongside her husband. Caroline's' passion was vegetable and flower gardening, cooking and baking. She loved to witness the rewards of her hard-working hands and the basement shelves were proof as jars of pickles, fruit and preservatives were in abundance and the freezers were stocked well with blanched produce. Fall was her favorite season and maybe it was because of the harvest both from the garden and grain fields. Maybe it was because her hands got a little rest from all the hard extra work. Caroline enjoyed cooking and baking and she spent most of her time in the kitchen. She loved trying new recipes but had many old-time favorites in which her family and friends got to enjoy. Besides gardening, cooking and baking and ensuring her family and friends were well fed, she worked part-time out of the home for several years as a Home Care Attendant in the Fisher Branch area. She loved chatting with her co-workers and clients and even more so, ensuring her clients got to taste her cooking when power-cooking. For many years, when her health permitted, Caroline enjoyed attending weddings, socials, community events and fall suppers. Her and her husband enjoyed visiting with friends and making new ones. At social events, they were often the couple dancing the evening away as both enjoyed a good Ukrainian polka, fox-trot and waltz. She loved to entertain and all entertaining included her home-cooking. Caroline battled several health aliments including cancer. She was a trooper but when recently her cancer returned, she no longer fought as her mobility was nil. She was a very independent lady her entire life and did not wish to live a life surrounded by care-givers. Her prayer to be with her husband, daughter, siblings and friends was heard and an angel came to lead the way. The family wishes to thank Dr. Donnelly, Dr. Pat Harris, Gimli Community Health Centre-Johnson Memorial Hospital, Arborg District Health Centre and Arborg Home Care for their medical attention and to those that visited with her and those that brought her baking's, meals, treats and flowers. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 5, 2018 at 1:00 PM at MacKenzie Funeral Chapel in Arborg. Interment will follow in Morweena Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Morweena Cemetery or Cancer Care. MacKENZIE FUNERAL HOME Arborg 1-800-467-0024 info@mackenziefh.com 13304815
