Richard George Harwood

HARWOOD, Richard George - Passed at the age of 68 on Jan. 16, 2018 at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto. Cause of death was complications from acute kidney failure. Rick was the ultimate "Car Guy". It was his lifelong passion. Rick was in his 28th year of teaching Auto Tech at Cedarbrae Collegiate in Toronto. Over the years he raced cars at various Southern Ontario stock car tracks. He rebuilt and restored numerous vintage cars mostly from the 50's and 60's. Occasionally he displayed cars at the Toronto Auto Show. His all time favourite was the 69 Chevelle. Rick was a great story teller who made a story come alive with vivid description and perhaps a little embellishment. He enjoyed teaching and although he could have retired many years ago, he carried on due to his love of passing on his car knowledge to new generations. Former students kept in touch with Rick for years after they graduated. Often times they would drop in at the high school auto shop for visits and a lunch time hamburger cooked outdoors by Rick. Rick is survived by his brother Dave (spouse Echo Karen), nephew Dennis (spouse Beah), his Aunt Kay and several cousins. Funeral arrangements are private.13245668

Thank you, Mr. Harwood

Racing in the Street, and the lyric “I got a ‘69 Chevy with a 396”, just triggered my memories of Mr Harwood.

I was taught by Mr Harwood (Grade 10, Agincourt) *and* his brother Mr Wark (Grade 8, Deer Park). I loved his intricate chalk drawings of car subsystems that he used to each us theory before practice. Oil changes, brake jobs, tire changes and more were among the skills that we learned as *kids*. What a privilege.

Thanks for teaching me about cars, life and more. RIP

I always enjoyed auto shop at Thompson. He made the class enjoyable. I remember the day going to the shop and he had brought his race car in.

Just for fun he started it up.

It shook the whole school and the principle came from the front to find out what happened! He was all smiles. RIP Mr Harwood

A teacher, a mentor, a friend

Forty years later, I still remember the life lessons that Rick Harwood taught us in his first year of teaching a Thompson C.I. While he was an incredible auto tech teacher, he taught us so much more. He taught us more about being decent people than any teacher I have ever known. Back then as I understand was still the case recently, students would rush to his classes and not want to leave when they were over. He was a teacher, a mentor and a friend. Thank you so much Rick.
Godspeed Rick

With Sympathy

I have visited with Rick in the "car zone" every few months for years. He was a teacher who helped students feel that they were joining a club, not a class. There was laughter and banter as well as learning happening in the room and the students were always proud to show what they were working on. He was a big-hearted person who had a ongoing, positive influence on many lives. My sincere condolences to his family.
