Helen Maud (nee Wright) Garioch

GARIOCH, Helen Maud (nee Wright) - Passed away peacefully at Northumberland Hills Hospital, September 23, 2017, the 105th anniversary of her mother's birth. Helen was the loving wife of Victor for 64 years. Cherished mother of Gordon (Nancy Durnan) and Elinor (Tom Copeland), all of Cobourg. She was the very proud grandmother of Douglas of Edmonton. Helen was pre-deceased by her daughter-in-law, Jackie. Born and raised in Aberdeen, Scotland, she would immigrate to Canada in 1955 with Gordon. Travelling on the Captain Cook, they would reunite with Vic in Montreal to start their new life together in Canada. Helen and Victor would settle first in Timmins then New Toronto where Elinor was born. They were early residents of the new community of Bramalea before moving to Caledon East and then to Brampton. Eventually, Cobourg would become home as they followed their children and grandchild here. While she enjoyed her life in Canada, she could always raise a rousing chorus of The Northern Lights of Aberdeen when prompted. In later years, as Alzheimer's took hold of her life, it was the stories and songs of her childhood that she would remember. Times of riding bicycles with Vic into the hills north of Aberdeen, picnics with friends on a chilly Aberdeen beach and her favourite story, seeing a young Princess Elizabeth descending a carriage to enter a candy shop in Ballater. The family would like to thank the staff of Regency Village, Port Hope, for making the last years of Helen's life easy on her and the family. Thanks also to Dr. Carson Kwok and especially to the nurses and staff of the Palliative Care department at Northumberland Hills Hospital. Your caring and compassion was appreciated very much. Those wishing may make a memorial donation to the Northumberland Hills Hospital Foundation or to the Alzheimer Society. Condolences received at www.MacCoubrey.com. Helen had many turns of phrase but her favourite saying was, “Once a Wright, Always a Wright”. 13213594
